Yep, I’m in GREAT  shape! Just like every single doctor and gym owner in the world.

Day 3

Im getting in the swing of this daily writing challenge. Since I’m away with my team for the week, hopefully, I thought I’d take the time to inform all of my lovely readers what it is that an Athletic Trainer actually does.

“Athletic trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. Athletic trainers work under the direction of a physician as prescribed by state licensure statutes.
Athletic trainers are sometimes confused with personal trainers. There is, however, a large difference in the education, skillset, job duties and patients of an athletic trainer and a personal trainer. The athletic training academic curriculum and clinical training follows the medical model. Athletic trainers must graduate from an accredited baccalaureate or master’s program, and 70% of ATs have a master’s degree.”

Yes, I have a Masters degree along with my BS with Specialization in Athletic Training from Hofstra University. Obtaining a masters degree did little to nothing for my career financially. It was only a couple hundred dollars since I studied at the University I was concurrently working at. So no big deal for me. But why spend thousands of dollars if it isn’t giving you a greater financial benefit over your lifetime?
Athletic Training is certainly not a glitz and glam profession. Quite often there is no recognition for a superstar performance. Going out of your way is typically seen with a “isn’t that your job” mentality. My job doesn’t have many limits as to what I’d do to make a situation work. I do what I needs to be done to get an athlete back on the field. I fix boo boos, tape ankles, put together rehabilitation protocols, make referrals to the appropriate medical specialist, take care of medial bills, massage knots, give out tissues, provide a sounding board to frustrated college athletes, and give out hugs prn. (That means “as needed”)

This week we are at the regional section of the NCAA Tournament in Buffalo, NY. Tomorrow we play the first ranked team, NYIT, which is located 10 miles from us down on Long Island. (Yup, had to drive 8 hours to play a team that is a 25 minute drive away)

The drive up was painfully scary. Like, pictured myself on the side of the road in a massive wreck because we were swerving in and out of lanes, and hit the rumble strips more than a handful of times. A tense 8 hours is putting it lightly.

  • Rolled up to the hotel at about 1:30 am.
  • Sleep by 2:45 am.
  • Breakfast at 8:45 am.
  • Leave for practice around 10:15 am.
  • Practice ends 11:55 am.
  • Lunch 12:20 pm. (at amazing pancake place)
  • Arrive back at hotel 1:40 pm. (awaiting itinerary)
  • Found out the itinerary 2pm. (from student-athletes…not Coach…)
  • Took advantage of down time to workout and hit the hot tub!
  • Dinner 5:30 pm. (nice little Buffalo tavern)
  • Arrive back at hotel 7ish pm.
  • Stay up until 12:30 am. so you can finish your blog post because procrastinating is a high level quality of yours. ( I added this at 11:57 pm)

And tomorrow…is a completely different day. That’s one of the best parts of being an AT. Got to get up and workout first thing. Niagara Falls in the morning. Playoff game at 2:30, which we need to win to stay in the tournament. This also means we get to delay that horrible trip home for at least a day. It’s single elimination. You lose you go home.
This time of the year is more challenging for me because I like to see the days ahead of me with a little bit of clarity.

Being totally up in the air is un-grounding. And just typing that reminds me that a horoscope I read for this month said that I need to stay grounded.
(One way to ground yourself is meditation. Another way is to physically be in contact with the earth.) And I’ll end on that side track thought. Love you!
