Dropping a huge bomb…wait for it…
I am no longer a vegetarian!
Truthfully, I was mostly vegetarian but ate seafood occasionally. I will be following a primarily plant based diet going forward. The reason is based on a couple of things that I’ll go over later.
I eat out often for work. If you ever wanted to avoid wheat in a restaurant your options are significantly decreased. Now, take meat off the list…Yup, I’d be starving to death on most of the trips. Seafood was a viable option to give me some healthy protein options.
Seafood is something I can share with my dad. He loves it and would eat seafood every day probably in his idea of heaven. I think he secretly loves cooking when it’s not just for him and my mom, but he complains as though you told him he’s not allowed to golf ever again. Actually, he complains like that about every single thing. (But that’s for another time) So when I said “yes” to dinner because it was seafood night I like to think I made his day.
Why would you not eat a big juicy steak ever again?
I became a pescatarian during school break in January of 2013. (I’m pretty sure that’s the correct year. I didn’t document it apparently, but I know it was Jan.) I was binge watching documentaries on Netflix in my apartment. I got into them because I thought it was an interesting topic. Here are a couple of recommendations:
The first movie I watched was Forks Over Knives. This movie “examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us, can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting animal-based and processed foods.” From there I watched the game changer, Vegucated. Vegucated follows three New Yorkers on a vegan diet for 6 weeks and documents them as they learn how the food they eat is processed. I highly recommend taking some time to watch one or two of these. Even if you don’t change your diet at all, I believe that knowing and being consciously aware of what we are putting in our bodies and how that affects the world around us is essential to a healthy environment.

The first burger I had following this decision was a Black Bean Burger from Duffy’s while visiting my parents in Florida. It was fabulous! I was all set, no looking back.
Since I already gave away the ending I can skip a lot of the middle here.
A few months back I saw a news report on News 12 about a farm in Mattituck, NY. (One of my favorite places on the planet) I had been thinking about adding chicken back into my diet for weight loss reasons and to give me an easier protein to consume. I also stumbled upon “Cooking Right 4 Your Type” while cleaning around the house. Being type “O” recommends a high lean meat intake in my diet. I figured why not try it out. I looked up the news report again and contacted Browder’s Birds two weeks ago since I was heading out east for the wedding, but their season was over for fresh chicken so I had to find a different farm.
I found the Cotton Cattle Company by googling pasture raised chicken in the local area and searching Eat Wild. I ordered a couple pounds extra because delivery charge is $20. It’s so worth it! The chicken was delicious. I ate is with no guilt whatsoever. I give thanks for my food and can be at peace with a product that is humanely raised and local.
Going forward, I plan to eat the chicken that I buy and prepare myself. After all, I can’t throw away all of my values here. Seafood is still on the menu, however not often as the way farming of the sea damages the ecosystem is troubling to me.
